The Snow Queen (Universal animated film)

The Snow Queen was an unreleased computer-animated fantasy adventure film based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was directed by Audel LaRoque and was supposed to be produced by Universal Studios.

Plot

Two children, Gerda and Kai, embark on a journey to stop the Snow Queen from turning the world into ice.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. It was considered too dark for children.
  2. Possible development issues may have caused this film to be cancelled.
  3. Audel LaRoque was busy directing Computeropolis 2.

Results

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • Some of the elements were later reused in 2012 Universal Animation film Quest (which was directed by Audel LaRoque), as well as 2015's Paradoria.
  • In 2013, Walt Disney Animation Studios released their own film adaptation of The Snow Queen called Frozen which was released on November 27, 2013.
  • Universal went on to release three animated films in 2008, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie, Swapped, and The Tale of Despereaux.
  • Universal later released the 2012 Russian computer-animated film adaptation of The Snow Queen in France.
