The Smurfs was a planned trilogy based in Peyo’s characters that was announced in 2006 and was going to be made by Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures. The original draft was described as an epic-comedic fantasy, like The Lord of the Rings meets The Princess Bride and “Shrek”.

The history of this trilogy would focus on the origin of the Smurfs and the backstory of Gargamel, similar to the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (1999-2005)

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. Sony bought the rights of The Smurfs, making it into the 2011 film of the same name.
