In 1971 Mary Stewart published The Little Broomstick, the film rights were acquired Walt Disney Productions. In 1980, director Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman decided to make an animated adaptation of the story after the release of The Fox and the Hound.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. The studio deemed the project being too similar to the premise of Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
  2. Disney wanted the animation department to produce The Black Cauldron.

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • The book was adapted into Mary and the Witch's Flower, which was released in 2017.
