The Godfather Part IV was a planned sequel film in the Godfather series. It was cancelled when director Francis Ford Coppola's cowriter Mario Puzo died in July 1999.[1]

Plot

The series would have seen Vincent Corleone lead the Corleone crime family through a ten year destructive war, which lost his respect with other crime families'. This would have ended with the death of Vincent, and the downfall of the Corleone crime family for good. Flashbacks to the 1930s would have shown Vito Corleone gaining political influence, and also the rise of Vincent's father Sonny.

Cast

  • Andy Garcia as Vincent Corleone
  • Al Pacino as Michael Corleone

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. Mario Puzo died in July 1999 before the film could be launched into production (mentioned earlier).
  2. Francis Ford Coppola was very reluctant about returning to the Godfather franchise despite critical acclaim.

Results

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • Elements of the script depicting flashbacks set in the 1930s with a young Sonny Corleone was used for the 2012 prequel novel The Family Corleone.
