Rio 3 was a planned unproduced Blue Sky Studios movie. It was going to be the third installment in the Rio saga.

Shortly after Rio 2, in 2014, the director of the first and second films, Carlos Saldanha stated the following in an interview:

"It’s a little early, granted. I want to see how Rio is accepted by the audience, and how people take this sequel. Of course, I have a lot of stories to tell, so we’re [starting to] prepare for it. Because we love these characters so much, and there are a lot of things in my head that maybe I couldn’t put in the movie. I wanted to take them to a different place. So I don’t know yet. We’ll see what happens."

This reveals that there were actually plans to make Rio 3. However, apart from what was declared by Carlos Saldanha and in part, by other members of the cast interviewed; It is unknown if other members of Blue sky studios have stated anything about the sequel.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. The film has not been made until now.
  2. The closure of the Blue Sky studios, enacted on April 2021, killed almost any possibility of the film being made.

  • Because it is unlikely that Disney will make a third film, (how it happened with Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild), the film remains canceled indefinitely.
  • The Rio franchise is now a duology.
