Popeye (Sony Pictures Animation)

From Cancelled Movies Wiki
(Redirected from Popeye (2016 animated film))

Popeye was a proposed film that was going to be made by Sony Pictures Animation. The film was to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory).

Plot

If you watch the animation test, it looks like that Popeye and Eugene the Jeep are fighting some pirates while attempting to save Olive from The Sea Hag.

Cast

  • Tom Kenny as Popeye
  • Seth Rogen as Eugene the Jeep
  • Grey DeLisle as Olive Oyl
  • Whoopi Goldberg as Maid Olive
  • Jason Lee as Bluto
  • Liam Neeson as The Sea Hag

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. Sony decided to focus more on the production of The Emoji Movie, but it was later negatively received by critics because of its unoriginal story, unlikeable characters, and its elaborate product placement for numerous apps.
  2. Genndy Tartakovsky thought that the Popeye movie wouldn't work because he thought it would be a box-office bomb with only $30 million against a $50 million budget.
  3. Another reason why the movie was canceled is because of the fans, who made an extreme rude comment about the 3D's first look of Popeye.

Results

  • Sony released The Emoji Movie in 2017. Despite being a modest success at the box office, The Emoji Movie was almost universally panned by critics and audiences alike due to the shameless product placement, unlikeable characters, and the unoriginal story that rehashed Wreck-It Ralph, The Lego Movie, and Inside Out. Its sequels were also cancelled as well.
  • As of May 2020, the animated Popeye film has moved to King Features Syndicate to be developed with Genndy Tartakovsky returning to the project with Tom Kenny, Seth Rogen, and Grey DeLisle reprising their roles, although Whoopi Goldberg, Jason Lee, and Liam Neeson might not be back for the Popeye film.
