Popeye was a proposed film that was going to be made by Sony Pictures Animation. The film was to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory).


The plot is currently unknown.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. Sony decided to focus more on production of The Emoji Movie.
  2. Genndy Tartakovsky thought that the Popeye movie wouldn't work.

  • Sony released The Emoji Movie in 2017. Despite being a modest success at the box office, The Emoji Movie was almost universally panned by critics and audiences alike.
  • As of May 2020, the animated Popeye film has moved to King Features Syndicate to be developed with Genndy Tartakovsky returning to the project.
