Battle Royale (American Remake)
In 2006, New Line Cinema was working on making an American remake of the Japanese cult classic Battle Royale. It was scheduled for a 2008 release date, but was cancelled following the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting.
The plot would have been the same as the Japanese original, only set in the United States.
Why It Was Cancelled
1. In the wake of the Virginia Tech school shooting, the event drove New Line Cinema to not wanting to make the film due to not be associated with teenagers killing each other.
2. In 2008, author Suzanne Collins created The Hunger Games. A series that was similar to Battle Royale, but set in a post apocalyptic world.
- The film was permanently cancelled and five years later, The Hunger Games got its first installment in the series.
